چکیده

Assessment of lameness is an everyday task for many veterinarians, it is an essential part of a prepurchase examination and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has included it into the list if 'day one skills' for veterinary graduates. Recently, the first public National Equine Health Survey pioneered by the Blue Cross animal charity and supported by the British Equine Veterinary Association showed that lameness was the most common problem affecting 11% of the surveyed horses and lameness does not only compromise equine welfare and performance, but it also results in substantial financial costs to the equine industry.

Rater agreement of visual lameness assessment in horses during lungeing

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Lungeing is an important part of lameness examinations as the circular path may accentuate low-grade lameness. Movement asymmetries related to the circular path, to compensatory movements and to pain make the lameness evaluation complex. Scientific studies have shown high inter-rater variation when assessing lameness during straight line movement. OBJECTIVES The a...

Gait analysis of horses for lameness detection with radar sensors

This paper presents the preliminary investigation of the use of radar signatures to detect and assess lameness of horses and its severity. Radar sensors in this context can provide attractive contactless sensing capabilities, as a complementary or alternative technology to the current techniques for lameness assessment using video-graphics and inertial sensors attached to the horses’ body. The ...

Head, withers and pelvic movement asymmetry and their relative timing in trot in racing Thoroughbreds in training

BACKGROUND Horses show compensatory head movement in hindlimb lameness and compensatory pelvis movement in forelimb lameness but little is known about the relationship of withers movement symmetry with head and pelvic asymmetry in horses with naturally occurring gait asymmetries. OBJECTIVES To document head, withers and pelvic movement asymmetry and timing differences in horses with naturally...

The advance of clinical biomechanics.

Research about equine locomotion has developed from merely descriptive studies to an integral part of equine medicine and competitive events. During the last 25 years, developments in modern audiovisual and computer technology have enabled major progress to be achieved in the analysis of both athletic locomotion and patterns of pathological deviations. Many aspects of the research catalogue, el...

Comparison of first and second acupuncture treatments in horses with chronic laminitis

Background: Laminitis is a common but critical disease that causes severe pain and disability in horses. The etiology and pathogenesis of laminitis remain inconclusive and a multimodal therapeutic approach is generally indicated. Acupuncture has been used as a treatment option; however, the required number of treatments is still controversial due to the lack of objective scient...
